New Communication Technologies and Family: The study of the relationship between new media usage and parental-child relations among high school students in Shiraz city

Abstract
Part of the contemporary family's challenges relates to the parent-child relations, and the interaction of family members today is more than ever affected by the media and in particular by modern communication technologies. The present study is an attempt to understand the effect of using modern communication technologies on parenting and children relationships among students in Shiraz. The study was conducted quantitatively using a survey method. The statistical population of this study was high school students in Shiraz's 10 regions. Using a multi-stage random sampling method, 400 questionnaires were selected as sample and answered to the questionnaire. Family relations in this research have been evaluated in three dimensions of face-to-face relations, intimate relations and supportive relations. The results of the research indicate that there is a negative and significant relationship between Internet usage variables and face-to-face relations (-0/222), intimate relations (-0/155) and supportive relationships (-/160), but the findings did not show a significant relationship between the type of use of modern communication technologies (interactive and non-interactive) and the dimensions of parent-child relationships. The results of the study show that the different dimensions of parent-child relationship are reduced. By devoting more time to new media, there is less time to deepen the parent-child relationship.
