Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of personality traits on the musical taste of male students of the second secondary school in Shahrrafsanjan, Kerman. The statistical population of the present study was all male students of the second secondary school in Rafsanjan city, Kerman. Of these, 375 people were selected as a sample using Cochran's formula. The research sampling method was multi-stage cluster sampling. Data were collected using Goldberg's (1999) big five personality factor questionnaire and a researcher-made musical taste questionnaire. The findings showed that there is a positive and significant relationship between musical tendency and agreeableness and neuroticism. However, a negative and significant relationship was observed between the feeling of musical inclination and extroversion. Also, among the personality variables, the personality factor of agreeableness has the greatest power to explain students' musical tendencies. After that, the explanatory power of neuroticism and then conscientiousness is greater in predicting the musical tendency variable. Thus, individual differences in personality may partly determine how music is experienced.
